The US Flew a Plane Over the Taiwan Strait
Today, September 17, an American reconnaissance plane flew over the Taiwan Strait, prompting an immediate reaction from China. China scrambled its fighters to monitor and escort the US aircraft. This was reported by the press service of the 7th Fleet of the US Navy.
«The United States supports navigational rights and freedoms for all countries», – said in the press release.
The US stated that the flight was conducted in accordance with international law and demonstrates their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region. China, in turn, views such actions as a provocation and a threat to its national sovereignty.
«The transit of the aircraft through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the US commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region. The US armed forces fly, sail, and operate wherever international law allows», – emphasized in the military statement.
The People's Liberation Army of China, according to China Military, deployed its Eastern Theater Command fighters to monitor and escort the Boeing P-8 Poseidon.
