Russia has dispatched 200 military instructors to Equatorial Guinea to safeguard the country's president. This indicates an increase in Russia's influence in West Africa. According to Reuters, Russian instructors trained security personnel in the country's two largest cities, which is a major oil exporter. American companies, which had invested substantial amounts in the country, subsequently changed their plans.
Reuters notes that the presence of Russian security services enables the protection of the dynasty that has ruled Equatorial Guinea since 1979. President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo is grooming his son to take over. The goal of the Russian instructors was to ensure the safety of the president's high-ranking son, who is a multimillionaire and vice president. He has been investigated and accused of embezzlement and money laundering in various countries around the world.
In September, President Obiang visited Moscow, where he thanked Vladimir Putin for sending 'instructors' to strengthen the country's defense.
