Priority - end the war in Gaza
The head of the UN Human Rights Office stated that ending the nearly year-long war in Gaza is a priority and urged countries to take action over what he called a "blatant disregard" for international law in the occupied Palestinian territories by Israel.
According to Gaza health authorities, more than 40,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023, when Israel launched a military campaign in response to cross-border attacks by Hamas militants, Reuters reports.
The Hamas attacks resulted in the death of 1,200 people and another 250 were taken hostage. The conflict has also spurred a surge of violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
"Ending this war and preventing a full-scale regional conflict is an absolute and urgent priority. States must not - and cannot - tolerate the blatant disregard for international law, including binding Security Council (UN) resolutions and International Court orders, in this or any other situation," said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk in his speech at the start of the five-week session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
