Owners of boilers face problems: Ukrainians will have to switch to another heating system.

The European Union bans gas boilers
Changes to the Energy Efficiency in Buildings Directive, approved by the European Parliament, foresee the discontinuation of support for gas boilers starting in 2025. This decision will lead to a transition towards energy-efficient heating systems.
Ukrainian owners of gas boilers are also forced to adapt to new requirements. From 2030, gas and coal heating systems in new constructions will be prohibited, and by 2040 all EU countries must fully transition to alternative heating sources.
The main goal of such changes is to reduce harmful emissions and improve air quality. However, the final implementation of the new rules requires the agreement of ministers from all EU countries.
Key provisions of the new Directive:
- Elimination of harmful emissions from residential buildings over 25 years
- Reduction of energy consumption by 16% by 2030 and an additional decrease by 20-22% by 2035
- Ensuring compliance with environmental standards in new multi-apartment buildings starting in 2028
- Implementation of stringent environmental requirements for all new residential buildings from 2030
The new rules provide exceptions for agricultural farms, historical, and religious buildings.
This EU initiative coincides with the commitments made at the climate summit in Glasgow, where a phased phase-out of coal-fired power plants was announced to preserve the planet's ecology.
Impact on Ukraine
These changes in the EU energy policy may affect the energy strategy of Ukrainian households. It is necessary to seek alternatives to gas boilers and improve the energy efficiency of residential buildings.
